Besides that, the author uses letters and emails to convey EllieвЂ™s inner thoughts about baking, religion and values. She seamlessly weaves in phrases and metaphors which show creative language use. The book blurb says that she вЂњtells it like it isвЂќ, and in terms of how the author sees disability, Ellie certainly is brutally honest with her thoughts. SheвЂ™s not afraid to be defiant to her parents and comment on issues in unusual ways. What really struck me out this book, was the personable and lively voice of Ellie. Also, she has a lot of spunk and sass in her voice (see the next point) that makes her a character that instantly engages the audience. She is great at golf, and she is witty and lighthearted.

The fact that Ellie is written as a character with hopes, dreams and the drive to succeed is a step in the right direction.ДЄlso, Ellie isnвЂ™t just solely defined by her love of baking. They have no mission in life except to вЂњovercome their disabilityвЂќ and be a heartwarming inspiration for non-disabled readers. Usually, if a protagonist is disabled, their personality will be defined by their disability. From the first page, you are immediately hit with her fiery passion and ambition in the culinary arts. Ellie (aka Lily) Cowan is a 12-year-old girl who is a self-made expert on cooking, baking and everything in the kitchen. ItвЂ™s refreshing to have a disabled girl be the star of the show in a middle-grade novel. When you specify that to вЂњprotagonistsвЂќ, the list grows even shorter. Thus, this book directly goes against the disability communityвЂ™s cry, Nothing About Us Without Us. Moreover, the author wrote in horrifying slurs and tropes about disability that one wonders whether any disabled person was included in the process of writing. However, what struck me most was how Sumner startlingly uses her identity as a nondisabled parent as a licence to justify her portrayal of disability. It certainly creates a unique and creative plot with an entertaining voice. IвЂ™d highly recommend this book.What happens when you cross Masterchef Junior with a tale about a kid moving to a new town? Jamie Sumner creates Roll With It with this premise in mind. I read this one aloud to my kids age eight and up, and they all loved it. If your kids have been more sheltered, Roll With It may spark some good conversations. But the brokenness portrayed echoes the brokenness in our world. The school system isnвЂ™t equipped to help Ellie. EllieвЂ™s parents are divorced, and her relationship with her dad is strained. ThereвЂ™s a lot of brokenness in this book. ItвЂ™s obvious that prayer is unfamiliar to her and church is something they only do when with her grandparents, but the prayers are honest and sincere. PrayerвЂ“This is not a book from a Christian publisher, but several times, Ellie tries to pray in a very sweet genuine way.

She loves baking and has fierce protective instincts for her family. Ellie especially has many facets of her personality. Three dimensional charactersвЂ“Roll With ItвЂ™s main characters are quirky, and it would have been easy to make any one of them a stereotype, but they arenвЂ™t. And as Ellie prepares to enter and win her grandparentsвЂ™ church annual baking contest, their friendship will face some even greater tests. But an unlikely friendship begins to form between these three misfits. When her neighbors, flamboyant Coralee and super literal Bert, begin hanging out with her, she isnвЂ™t sure what to think. Not to mention Ellie is now a trailer park kid. Being the kid in the wheelchair is hard enough without having to add a new school into the mix. But thatвЂ™s not the only thing Ellie has to worry about. The StoryД®llie and her mom have just moved into her grandparentвЂ™s trailer home to help with her ailing grandfather. But if I were to pinpoint one theme it would be that accepting help and friendship from the people who love you doesnвЂ™t threaten your independence. It touches on so many issues: living with a disability, dementia, complex friendships, standing out, and family.
